Alice in Wonderland, the 2010 movie production

Alice in Wonderland, the 2010 movie production was inspired by the popular children's story. It was originally an 1865 novel written by English mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Alice in Wonderland was also an animation movie created by Disney in 1951. The budget for this movie was 200 million dollars and it was directed by Tim Burton. The main character Alice is played by Mia Wasikowska. The wildly acclaimed Mad Hatter is played by Johnny Depp. The White Queen is played by Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter plays the Red Queen.

The movie is a spinoff of the original story, demonstrating Alice as a young adult in a society that has many expectations. Alice is trapped in a recurring dream she has about a land named Wonderland, but she also suffocated in the society she lives in as well. The nineteen year old girl has suffered through the death of her father, and struggles to get along with her mother who is solely focused on mannerisms and formality. Alice finds herself at a garden party in which she is proposed to by a man who she has no interest in. She ends up running away and falling in a hole that leads her to Wonderland. In there she finds that the characters she thought was solely in her dreams, were actual living beings. They had been waiting for her and trying to lure her into Wonderland because a prophecy had stated that she was the savior and she solely would bring justice to the Red Queen. She encountered all of her childhood memories such as the Mad Hatter, rabbit, Cheshire cat, caterpillar, March Hare, TweedleDee, TweedleDum, and etc. Eventually she crosses paths with the Red Queen, and her husband the Knave of Hearts. She originally goes under cover and undetected as Alice. Eventually the Red Queen discovers who she is and there is a great battle between the Red Queen and her soldiers versus Alice and the citizens of Wonderland. In the end Alice wins this battle but has to pick her battles back home. She denies Hamishs request for marriage, and requests for a ship to trade on. Hamishs father acknowledges Alices brilliance for the idea to trade with China and grants her something she never believed was possible. In a world where females sit at home and idly twiddle their thumbs, Alice has managed to overcome the status quo and travel the world like she always wanted to.

Johnny Depp had to undergo hours of makeup to create the look for the Mad Hatter, but it wasn’t just the incredulous makeup or vivid outfits that solely brought his character to life. The Mad Hatter expresses nothing but pure joy and natural carefree attitude. Johnny Depp was able to bring to life a character who defies the stiffness and formalities of real life, and instead focuses on his deranged lifestyle. The phrase mad as a hatter was coined from the storyline, and correctly depicts the insanity of Wonderland. In an intense moment between the Mad Hatter and Alice, the Mad Hatter states that there is nothing wrong with being crazy because, We are all mad here. The Mad Hatter fully embraces his absurd habits, outrageous tea parties, and focuses his creative juice into hats. He is able to have a successful business because he is unapologetic about who he is and it is demonstrated through his hat designs. The Mad Hatter, was and will forever be my favorite character for his remorseless and overall gleeful attitude.

The movie overall used striking colors and detailed extraterrestrial designs in every aspect such as the clothing of the characters, the castles, and even the shape of the characters. The Red Queen had a fully patterned red and black checkered castle, soldiers as playing cards, and a gigantic heart shaped head. Twins Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum both have very round bodies and a dense thinking process. The Cheshire Cat always looked incredibly amused because of his gigantic grin. Each character had their own absure personality but nobody has any qualms about it or judges them for being different, because in Wonderland there is no need to conform to society.

Alice in Wonderland is one of the six movies in the world that have passed the one billion mark in a global box office. The movie overall was a huge hit across the world, and continues to make money even though it is approximating its 7th year of release in March.

This movie will forever be one of my favorites because you hardly see such an unusual and unconventional cast. Each character is unlike any other character from any other book. They all have odd tendencies and deranged ways of thinking, but that is what makes the movie amusing and creative. No one would think that eating a shortcake could make you grown up to sixty feet tall, or that drinking a fixture would make you go small. No one would think that a caterpillar could smoke a hookah, a cat could smile, a rabbit is punctual, or someone who makes hats could be so completely crazy. It is a mixture of totally random characters and ideas, and it comes together to create a something unexpected but refreshing. Alice in Wonderland is an amazing movie for its visuals, characters, and themes.
