Great Gatsby is centered around Jay Gatsby

The movie I will be reviewing is called The Great Gatsby. Baz Luhrmann is the directed and finished this movie in 2013. Leonardo Dicaprio plays Gatsby, Tobey maguire plays Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan, Elizabeth Debicki plays Jordan Baker, Joel Edgerton plays Tom Buchanan, and Isla Fisher plays Myrtle Wilson. The budget for the Great Gatsby is 105 million USD. The filming for the Gatsby's mansion was the college building of the International College of Management in Sydney. Some inspiration was also drawn from other Gold Coast, Long Island, mansions, such as Oheka Castle and La Selva Mansion.

The Great Gatsby is centered around Jay Gatsby, a man who arranges his life around one desire: to be reunited with Daisy Buchanan, the love he lost five years prior to 1922. Gatsby's quest leads him from poverty to wealth through bootlegging, into the arms of his beloved for a short period, and eventually to death. Gatsby lives at West Egg, the township outside Manhattan on Long Island Sound. Across the bay at East Egg are the grand houses of the old-money people, among them are the rich and arrogant Tom Buchanan, husband of Daisy Buchanan. The film's principal figure is not Gatsby but Nick Carraway, the narrator, aged 30, a midwesterner educated at Yale alongside Tom Buchanan and Daisy's cousin. Nick moves in next door to Gatsby's mansion while he attempts to establish himself in the stockmarket. Gatsby uses Nick as a way of re-engaging with Daisy. Tom is suspicious of Daisy and Gatsbys affair, and tries to prove Gatsbys true identity. Daisy becomes enraged at Tom's condescending, superior attitude, and says that she will leave Tom for Gatsby. However, when the truth reveals that Gatsby is not the respected pharmacist he claims to be, but a bootlegger, Daisy refuses to leave Tom and he insist that Gatsby drive her home. Daisy is at the wheel when the car hits Myrtle Wilson, coincidentally Tom's other woman. Mr. Wilson discovers his wife's affair, and asks around about the car that hit her. thinking that Gatsby hit her, George Wilson goes to Gatsby's house and shoots him, and then shoots himself. Nick is the only one that shows up to Gatsbys funeral after Gatsby passed away. Tom and Daisy moves Chicago to escape the conflicts in New York. The Great Gatsby explores the sociology of wealth. The movie shows how the new millionaires of the 1920s represented by west egg differ from and relate to the old money, represented by east egg. The movie portrays the newly rich as people only seeking pleasure and wealth. On the other hand, the older generation possesses elegance and morals. This is ironic because the Buchanans were careless people. At the end of the movie, they move to a new house to avoid attending Gatsbys funeral. Gatsby is loyal to the environment and people. However, Gatsbys good personality lead to his death, by accepting the blame for killing Myrtle rather than letting Daisy receive the consequence, and the Buchanans bad traits allow them to disappear from the conflict. The last words in the movie, So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. has significant meaning. These words conveys the significance of the past to dreams of the future. He focuses on the struggle of humans to achieve their goals by trying to recreate the past. While people never lose their perseverance, they use all of their energy in pursuit of a goal that moves ever farther away. This characterizes Gatsbys struggle to recreate his affair with Daisy.

The film is good at portraying mystery around Gatsby. For example, the audience do not see Gatsbys face in the beginning but only his hands pulling the curtains. Tobey maguire was good at portraying his innocence. Joel Edgerton's Tom suits the book's description of the character as intimidating and possesses arrogance because of his money. He is scary but comprehensible. The negative of this movie is that it is too modern to portray the 1920s, as the characters dance to Jay-Z music.
