One of my favorite movies of all time is Titanic, and that is the movie I will be reviewing. The movie was based on the real life RMS Titanic which was deemed unsinkable, and the ship of dreams. The ship met its tragic fate on the night of April 14, 1912 when it struck an iceberg, and sunk. The wreck took over 1,496 lives, and only left 712 survivors.
Although the ship sank over 100 years ago, the wreckage can still be seen and is located 370 miles south off the coast of Newfoundland, and is 12,500 feet underwater. New bacteria has been found and the Titanic is estimated to disappear in the next fifteen to twenty years.
Almost 82 years after the tragedy a movie was made in 1997 based on the true story. When Titanic the movie was made it cost 220 Million dollars, the actual ship cost 7.5 Million dollars to build. The movie was filmed in many different locations including California, Mexico, and Canada. The main cast for the movie was Leonardo DiCaprio who played Jack Dawson, Kate Winslet who played Rose Dewitt Bukater, and Billy Zane who played Caledon Hockley. The directors name is James Cameron.
The most iconic and memorable scene of the film was when Jack Dawson went to the front of the ship and yelled, I’M THE KING OF THE WORLD! that scene was shot using a giant green screen. The movies big water scenes were shot in a three feet deep pool. Another really important scene of the film was when the Titanic struck the iceberg and was sinking. In real life the ship took around two hours and forty minutes, which is almost about the same time it took in the movie. The director wanted the movie to be as realistic as possible and almost as to pay a tribute to the lives lost. A tribute that was made in the movie was when it showed an elderly couple hugging on a bed and waiting to go down with the ship. This scene was for the two real life Macys store owners who died on the ship.
When the director hired extras for the movie, each extra had to go through a three-hour training process on how the people on Titanic would have acted and this was so the movie could have a more authentic feel, there were over 3,000 extras on set. After the character Jack Dawson was made, James realized there was a man named J. Dawson who had died on Titanic.
I feel as if Leonardo and Kate were the perfect fit for the roles of Jack and Rose. Their performances were outstanding and to be able to perform scenes sometimes in front of about two thousand people at a time without getting nervous takes a lot of talent. The scene where Rose spat on the face of Caledon, was completely improvised by Kate and Billys reaction of disgust was genuine. This movie is what helped get Leonardo and Kate all their fame, and how they were able to get many more amazing movie roles. I watched an interview where Kate Winslet talks about her performance on the film and she says she loves the movie as a whole, but is too embarrassed to watch herself play the role of Rose.
About 69 percent of the people who saw the film really enjoyed and loved it. The movies average rating is 8/10. The first time I remember seeing this movie was when I was about 5 years old, ever since then I have been fascinated by the film and Titanics real life wreckage. I just love the way it was portrayed and adding the tragic love story of Jack and Rose is what made me love it even more. I remember thinking Jack and Rose were real life people that were actually on the boat, but I sadly found out they were just created by Hollywood for the plot of the movie. There is a museum filled with things recovered from the wreckage and I would love to go visit it someday and get a glimpse of what the Titanic was really like.
